Frequently Asked Questions

What is Electronic Article Desktop Delivery?
Electronic Article Desktop Delivery is a new service in which journal articles or book chapters are sent in PDF format and reside on a HTTP server for viewing/printing by the requester.

What form do I use?
Use the Interlibrary Loan request form. However, in order to have the article/chapter delivered electronically, you will need to select the "electronic" option as preferred delivery.

How will I be notified when an article is available?
You will receive an e-mail notification when the article is available for viewing and/or printing. This e-mail message will contain a PIN number and a URL to the location of the article. You can click on the URL and enter your full e-mail address and PIN. The PIN number is case sensitive and will need to be typed in exactly as it appears on the e-mail notification. Once entered, a link to the electronic version of the article will be shown.

How long will I have access to the article?
You are allowed 5 times to view the article, or 14 days. The article will be removed and then deleted at this time. Please be aware that the article will be available 14 days from the date of notification, not the date you first view the article.

Can I still have articles mailed to me?
Electronic delivery of articles is optional. Articles can still be mailed to your home or campus address if you prefer. Choose the "mail" option as preferred delivery to have the article mailed.

Who may use electronic article desktop delivery?
Electronic delivery of articles is available to any interested University of Iowa faculty, student, or staff.

How long does it take to receive articles via this method of delivery?
You should receive an e-mail notification within a week upon request. However, this is an average figure and the article could take anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks to arrive.

What software do I need on my computer to view articles?
You will need:
1. A recent version of a web browser. There may be problems with browsers beyond Netscape and Internet Explorer. If you have problems accessing your document, please contact us immediately. We can always print out the article if the problems appear to be insurmountable.
2. Adobe Acrobat Reader, version 5 or higher if you wish to download your article. The download function is not a part of earlier versions. If you do not have the Adobe Acrobat Reader, it is available free of charge at the Adobe website.

I requested this to be sent electronically, why did I receive it through the mail?
Unfortunately, not all libraries have the capability of sending articles electronically. If we receive a paper copy of the item, it will be mailed to you. In addition, other libraries may decide to mail articles if they contain detailed pictures, have tight bindings or are copies made from microfilm or oversized items. If staffing permits, we will scan the photocopy and send it to you electronically.

Is there a limit as to how many articles I can have electronically delivered?
No, however, please keep in mind that you only have 14 days from the date of notification to view each article, and that there is an overall limit of 10 requests per week.

How long will it take to download an article?
This is a function of your connection and the size of the article. From University of Iowa Libraries or other University networked computers, the download should be very rapid. Using a 56K modem, a twenty-page article can take as long as 20-30 minutes. Other available options will fall between these extremes. In addition, these articles can be very large so you may need to access them at a workstation that has a Zip drive or a CD burner.

What if a page is missing or illegible?
If there are any pages missing or text that is illegible or cut off, please contact the Interlibrary Loan office immediately. We can be reached by phone at 335-9874 or by e-mail at lib-hardin-ill@uiowa.edu. Please have the citation information available so we can re-order the missing pages.

What if there are pages that are upside down?
Journal articles sent by the lending library are sometimes scanned in upside down. You can print the article so that you can organize the pages. If you are using the Adobe Acrobat Reader Version 5 or higher, there are buttons on the toolbar that allow you to rotate the pages on the screen.
